There are several requirements to get an acceptance by the graduate school and one of them is passing English proficiency test which Is IELTS or toefl. In 2012 I had a desire to complete MBA in the USA. As my academic English was not at the level to enter into graduate school I had to take one year of English as a second language program at Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia. At the time I had no idea what schools to apply to and what type of procedures to follow.
Maira Tungatarova is a highly knowledgeable and competent specialist in the field of education in the US who helped me find the best program to take my English to the next level as well as be prepared to pass the test. Back in 2012-2013 I happened to come across Maira Tungatarova who at the time was working for the US Embassy in Astana. Maira offered me her expertise to apply to universities and community colleges all across the US. Сейчас я жив у США уже с 2010 года и работаю инженером-системотехником в Northrop Grumman, где занимаюсь созданием космических ракет для отправки научного оборудования, продовольствия и логистического обеспечения для астронавтов на Международной Космической Станции (МКС).

Since I always attended a public high school in Kazakhstan, I struggled to find proper information on the college application process and was lacking academic communication skills. Needless to say, college admission applications and any other pertinent miscellaneous items require knowing small but sometimes crucial details.
I got to know about Maira and her Competitive College Club (CCC) at the American Corner in Astana toward the end of 10th grade. An upper-class student from my school was working with Maira at the time – she had already finished her application process and had been accepted to college. This gave me a bit of hope and encouragement to fulfill my childhood dream – to study in the United States.
It was very motivating attending the meeting of the previous CCC group where every student who was being mentored by Maira was sharing where they had been accepted to, uniqueness of the program, and scholarships.
As a result, I essentially spent the next entire year working under Maira’s guidance. This included weekly club meetings, volunteering opportunities, and live webchats with the U.S. colleges. Our weekly meetings contained application progress updates, document preparation, tips for test scheduling and preparation, essay writing workshops, as well as occasional guest speakers. On top of that, Maira provided coaching on how to communicate with university admission teams via email. Given the fact that my public school simply did not have a “college counselor” that could support me along the college application process, Maira’s involvement was a significant help for me and provided an opportunity for success.
In addition to working with Maira directly, the application process helped me enhance my leadership and academic skills. I had a great time working alongside other high school students on exam preparation (SAT & TOEFL) and we worked well as a team when discussing common application questions.
The overall result is as follows. I initially had a list of about 25 universities; I filed applications to no more than 10; I finalized applications and was persistent with about 5 colleges; and eventually was choosing between 3. After a very extensive application process and thorough research, in March of 2015 I chose to pursue an undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering at Mississippi State University because of a good scholarship and competitive ranking of the engineering school.
Worth mentioning, this college life at MSU was my first ever instance of traveling abroad. Nevertheless, I loved my American college application experience and the campus life itself. The decision to study in the US was probably the most life-changing one, and I am very thankful to Maira for all the support and guidance along the way.
